H: hair, Halloween, Holland, hot dog soup

h
HAIR
I admit it. I love wild hair. I change my hair color more often than the oil gets changed in my car. Blonde, brunette, redhead – and when it’s summer and I don’t have to worry about the watchful eye of coworkers and parents – blue, pink, or purple. Why not? It’s just hair.

HALLOWEEN
My sister’s birthday is on Halloween. So is Nevada Day. Although the latter isn’t very significant to me, I credit Seestah’s birthday for one of the reasons Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. Surely it’s that, and not the massive amounts of chocolate one can snag on this super spooky holiday.

HOLLAND
At 13, my family packed up our things and moved to The Netherlands. When I went to each teacher to sign out of my courses before moving, each one looked at the form (which had a reason for leaving), saw the word “Holland” and said, “Michigan?” By the end of the day, I was very tired of saying, “No, Europe.”

HOT DOG SOUP
I grew up with a pronounced overbite. This is what happens when one chooses to suck one’s own thumb until the ripe old age of 8. Seriously.
Luckily, the move to Holland also meant free orthodontic work. The only reason I can figure for the freeness of the dental-type stuff, is because all the new orthodontists are sent to work on military bases overseas, and they like to practice on the dependent children of the families stationed there. At least, this is what my 13-year-old self liked to think.
Anyway, this delightful bit of luck meant braces and mandibular surgery for me. This is a fancy way for saying “we’re going to cut open your gums, break off your jaw, move it forward, and then screw it all back together.”
When you have your jaw purposely broken, eating becomes a difficult thing to do. My dad bought a food processor so he could blend foods for me. I figured this would mean things like mashed potatoes, smashed carrots, and pureed peas.
It didn’t. It meant he was going to spend the next 3 months turning nearly every meal my family ate into a strange soup-like concoction -- just for me.
Including hotdogs. Bun included.

  1. I tipped my hair pink one summer and got the weirdest reactions. My mom was like, what are you going to do when you have to start interviewing for jobs? I said, well....I could cut it or dye it back.

It's not like a tattoo. Goodness.

I also get bored of my hair style easily and change the cut a lot. Well, about every six months.

I had jaw surgery, too. It was between my freshman and sophomore years of college. I lost 10 lbs the first week. It was horrible. Then I figured out how to eat more-normal food. Although frankly, I stuck to the soft things. I ate a LOT of scrambled eggs and mashed-up pancakes. My mom made me a lot of fruit smoothies. When I moved into the dorms, I made a lot of microwave-scrambled eggs. Your dad apparently decided to make it weird. You tell it great, though :)

  2. I have never been brave enough to rock the wild hair, even when I wanted to :(

My dad did the same thing when my sister had her wisdom teeth removed. Although she didn't have hot dog soup, she say there was nothing like a McDonald's cheeseburger all mashed up in the blender.

  3. I want to dye my hair some wild color this summer, just because I never have, and I'm not getting any younger.

And ground hot dog soup? Sounds nasty. Was it nasty? :D

And you should definitely have fun hair -- at least once!
