Poems on the Road, Day One

While driving last night I was thinking about a teaching demo on poetry at Summer Institute. We talked about the book Locomotion and looked at a list poem from the book to create our own list poems. In the book, the main character writes a poem that describes himself.

And that's how today's poem came about.

One big white van,
pushing forward.
Seven adventurers;
three grown boys,
two little darlings,
one gum-chewing navigator
and her Monster-swigging captain.
Some sleeping, some snacking,
all eager
for sunrise,
and fourteen hours
to slip by
quickly.
