I've watched too many kids count on their fingers, draw out circles and dots, skip count on paper, and just flat out guess when nothing else works.

This morning I rushed up the stairs to my classroom, eager to begin the day. It didn't matter that I was a few minutes later than I planned or that I was dangerously close to losing the juggling match with my latte, cellphone, and room key. It didn't matter that the lumpy, oversized bag slung over my shoulder was banging against my hip with each bound towards my room.

I had to get to class.

Last year, I brought my class into the mix by spending November teaching about story development as we worked together to finish our own novels. It was my husband. With a bright bouquet of flowers.

He came in, and after we settled the kids back down, joined in on all our classroom craziness for the rest of the day.

It appears that has been more difficult than originally believed.

This book is equal parts motivator, instigator, and proposition maker.  Henke invites the reader to take chances, leap before they look, and explore the unknown.


Rip the Page! is filled with poems and other literary tidbits to entice the reader to respond in writing. I've done all I can do, my kids have grown so tremendously that I can barely remember the fear that kicked me in the gut at the beginning of the school year when I realized just how extreme one class can be from another, and we are one day of instruction away from the writing TAKS.
